Adopting in Idaho

Adoptions in Idaho can be done through the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. Adoption agencies also facilitate adoptions in Idaho. Some agencies can help families looking to adopt domestically in the United States and internationally.

Individuals who choose to find a child needing a home through the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare will need to be at least twenty one years old. They will need to have a source of income to financially provide for the child. The adoptive family will need to have enough room in the home to provide a safe living environment for the child. In addition, the adoptive parents must also pass a physical examination, to show that they are healthy enough to care for the child. Families will have to meet the additional adoption requirements and submit all paperwork required before receiving a referral.

In Idaho the adoption process can take a year or more to finalize. Generally, the adoption process will take longer for children who are younger, than for older children or those with special needs.

Many of the children who need adoptive homes are considered to have special needs. These children may be able to get federal or state adoption assistance. This assistance can offer benefits to help adoptive families afford to adopt a child with special needs. One benefit provides up to two thousand dollars to help with the cost of finalizing the adoption. If eligible, these funds can only be used towards a one time expense.

Some children will be able to get Medicaid to help cover their medical expenses. In addition, the adoption assistance benefits can include monthly cash payment to meet the special needs of the child. Adoption assistance may continue until the child's eighteenth birthday.

Idaho adoptions can also be done through an adoption agency. Adoption agencies can help adoptive families who want to adopt domestically in the United States or internationally.

Adoptive families will need to choose an agency and submit the application and application fee. They will then need to see if their agency is licensed to do home studies. If their agency is not, then they will need to find another agency to prepare the home study.

Domestic adoptions in Idaho can take between zero to four years to find a child needing a home and to legalize the adoption. International adoptions can be completed between six to eighteen months.

Families who choose domestic adoption will be matched with a birthmother. Some birth parents do not wish to select the adoptive family. They leave this decision up to the agency, which then selects a family for the child. Many birth parents do decide to choose who the adoptive parents will be. Sometimes they make their decision by reviewing the adoptive parent's birth mother letter and picture portfolio, while other times they feel they need to meet the adoptive family in person.

It's important to remember that there are children all over the world who need homes. Your child may be found in a different state or even a different country.
